I think the statue of Superman in a dark grey and silver costume standing atop a heap of skulls was what finally pushed me over the edge.

Not for nothin', but Nolan is completely enamored of the whole superhero-as-true-crime idea he pushed in the Dark Knight trilogy. Well, yeah — that's been done with Superman before. It was called Adventures of Superman and it starred George Reeves. It might seem cheesy by today's standards, but it stands as a proof of concept that you can root Superman in the real world while keeping the hope and optimism that make him such an icon.

At least, that's my humble opinion.
